The Genesis of Joy

I’ve often wondered when or why or how I developed my high regard for the natural world.  Was I born with it or was it a moment or several moments over time in which I experienced a sort of enlightenment or revelation that the earth is sacred and more worthy of our reverence than just about anything.  I wonder because… I’ve been feeling this sense of urgency, now more than ever though I know that there has been a struggle for quite sometime…

So I thought maybe you could help by sharing a story or a moment that might have switched on something inside you.  Because I’m hoping that there is something inherent in us that desires to be good stewards of the earth and that we all have that switch- we just simply have to find a way to turn it on…

I remember digging up potatoes when I was barely old enough to speak.  I think I can remember it because in that moment I felt something turn on inside of me- joy.

I remember walking in the locust thicket in the early morning with my brother. The rising mist gave everything a halo. The birds were singing and flying in swooping arches under the canopy of the trees that seemed to stretch to heaven. I remember feeling very small….and somehow very big all at the same time.
