Outreach Programs - Bringing Field Trips to Your School or Library
If you do not see a program you know we have offered, or have a specific need, please do not hesitate to ask. These are our newest and/or most popular offerings.
All programs align with the Next Generation Science Standards.
Tracks!
Animals leave a lot of evidence of their lives in the forest. Using tracks, skulls, feathers, skins, and nests, we’ll discover the stories in the forest. Large Group Program or Hands-On Workshop
Earth, Moon, Sun
Using a model sun, Earths, and Moons, we’ll discover the motions of the Sun, Moon, Earth – why we have day and night, what directions we are spinning, why there are seasons, why there are phases of the Moon, and why there are eclipses. Hands-On Workshop
Leaves September - November
Explore all the aspects of leaves – with activities, experiments, and art! Learn what leaves do, why and how they are different, and why some change color and die. Extract chlorophyll – and other pigments in leaves, observe under UV light, create a piece of leafy art, and a scientific illustration – in an hour of discovery.
Hands –On Workshop
Solar Cooking May – September
For school classroom, we can focus on the engineering and redesign aspect that best correlates with the NGSS. We’ll come a little early to set up our simple solar cooker. Participants will have fun during an interactive lesson on light, heat, sun, angles, reflective and absorbing properties, and insulation. Then, everyone will design and build a solar cooker. Finally, we’ll sample what has been cooking away in our ovens. Solar Cooking is appropriate as a kids-only program or an adult-family program.
Adult/Family
Garden Planning and Seed-Starting
(late winter, early spring)
Learn how to successfully start seeds in your home. From pots and soil, to light and water, your plants can be healthier, bigger, and more productive than commercially-started seedlings. Participants take home seeds.
Hands-On Workshop
Sustainable House-Holding
Join us large-scale overview of the Energy, Water, and Materials that go into living in your home (apartment or house)! We will work through the influences and necessities on and of our everyday lives. ASPI presents options to allow you to live greener and save money.
Large Group Program
Going Organic – Managing Weeds and Pests
From wanting to eat straight from the garden and worries about our water supplies, to dying bee populations and the environmental cost of producing pesticides, there are many reason to raise food organically. We will review the major pests – and how to prevent and manage them in your garden with methods that fertilize and improve the soil and provide beauty for your landscape.
