Do you live in or around Rockcastle County, Kentucky?
This year our Grow Appalachia (GA) program offers free seeds, seedlings, tools, other supplies, and a lot of workshops for families wanting to grow and possibly, market their own food!
We teach garden planning, seed-starting, weed and pest managements, soil health, canning, drying, cooking healthy meals, extending the seasons through tunnels and cold frames, and more!

All of these things are free for our GA families.  In exchange the families agree to maintain their gardens, keep simple garden records, and volunteer 5 hours.  Come to one of the first meetings - workshop schedule - or click on the application to complete or print!

Grow Appalachia is planting the seeds for a sustainable future. Despite a rich agricultural history, family farming and gardening have become less popular and less profitable in Appalachia, limiting access to healthy, affordable food. Grow Appalachia seeks to solve pervasive food insecurity issues by restoring the relationship between the people and the land.

ASPI is one of many non-profits across four states operating a Grow Appalachia program. In 2012, we assisted 33 families in our Grow Appalachia program in both of the community gardens and with home gardens. In 2013, we had 47 families in our program. In 2014, we had four community gardens and 45 families.

Our program has three key goals:

1. Increase the number of families able to grow their own food in Rockcastle County.
2. Create a sustainable and economically viable means for participants to improve their quality of life through marketing and selling garden and garden related products.
3. Create jobs that ensure the availability and sustainability of healthy food systems in Rockcastle County
